What is it with you people??
I just got this message from a guy named Paul who’s a preacher:
…on the John Piper channel, and I wanted to share a section of Bible Scripture which may help to impart some understanding, if I have understood your comment “how do you know?”
1Co 2:4 And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: 1Co 2:5 That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.
1Co 2:6 Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought:
1Co 2:7 But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory:
1Co 2:8 Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.
1Co 2:9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.
1Co 2:10 But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.
1Co 2:11 For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.
1Co 2:12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.
1Co 2:13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
1Co 2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
1Co 2:15 But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man.
1Co 2:16 For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.
Thank you for sharing, and I pray God will give you understanding.
Be blessed in Christ><>
Here’s my reply:
Hey Paul (I assume that’s who you are, but you left no signature),
Your quotes use words like “Spirit”, “God”, “power”, and “wisdom”, but I see in these quotes no objectively verifiable evidence that anything you or John says is true. It’s all as made up as the Ancient Greek pantheon, Islam, Judaism, the Mayan faith, etc.
Moreover, you give no context to your quotes. As a lay person to your faith, I have no idea what I’m supposed to understand from the text you quoted, nor how I’m supposed to understand it.
In essence, you might as well have quoted the Vedas in the original Sanskrit.
Does this technique usually win you converts?
The thing I’ve never understood about the religious is they claim to have the market on capital T Truth, right? Well if it’s so damn truthful, why is it so hard to explain? Did Paul honestly expect that he’d send a few verses without context to someone who presumably has little to no knowledge on the subject and I’d simply say, “Ah, well, that’s clearly scripture from somewhere, therefore it must be true!” And what’s the “truth” in it? That there’s hidden, only-God-knows-it wisdom? If so, what’s the fucking point? If only God knows it, it might as well not exist.
My point here is that to my understanding, 1 of the goals of Christians is to proselytize. In order to do that, they must convince people like me that what they believe is true. And how do they do this? By spouting verses! How the fuck is that supposed to work? My honest hypothesis is that, in our culture so soaked in Bible shit anyway, the verses are supposed to sound profound and so the average reader/listener assumes that there must be wisdom there and so pursues the one who quoted it. That or the listener already is leaning towards the faith that is being professed so all they really need is a little nudge in the supposed right direction.
I, however, am coming from a prove-it-to-me position and have never, and I mean NEVER, been presented with concrete, repeatably,
objectively verifiable evidence that any of the bs the religious say is true. Not only that, but after most religious toss 1 or 2 attempts at me and I still ask questions, they shirk their responsibilities and leave it all to God. Well what the fuck was the point of their attempts in the 1st place if all they were going to do in the end was give up? And why would God need them anywy? You’d think an all-powerful entity would be able to come up with some way of satisfying my skepticism. I mean, the guy is all-powerful.
So thanks, Paul, for your attempt. Sorry it didn’t work out.
